The world is driven by emotion

Published on January 16, 2008

The stock market no longer moves based on sound fundamentals - it swings on the emotion of fund managers, media opinion, politics, and the average Joe’s paranoia.
On that note, Apple’s stock sunk yesterday when Steve Jobs didn’t announce any new ground breaking products at MacWorld. Fundamentally the company couldn’t be doing any better.
Hillary Clinton sheds a tear and the Democrats in New […]

Bay Area liberals hate capitalism except when it works in their favor (or why I’m finished with TechCrunch)

Published on January 11, 2008

I’m changing my tune on PayPerPost and dumping TechCrunch
I consider myself a HUGE John Galt capitalist. So recently when reading some ridiculous commentary on TechCrunch (which has consistently gone downhill over the last year) it dawned on me that my views on PayPerPost (PPP) directly contradicted my strong belief in Capitalism. Bear with me.
I don’t like PayPerPost. I don’t care […]

Why getting sued was a really good thing for me

Published on November 27, 2007

At one point in my life (early 2000’s) I was set on the idea that I was heading off to law school. Then I got sued. It was an experience that I will never forget. I’m not going to go into all the details of what happened except to say that in the end I […]

Do I use a Utah lawyer or a Silicon Valley lawyer?

Published on November 16, 2007

I attended a Utah Fund of Funds event on Tuesday at the Provo Library. The presenter was Karl Israelsen from Stoel Rive’s Corporate Group where he practices securities and corporate law. Karl did a good job of dissecting VC term sheets and the associated twists and turns. As the time was coming to a close […]

Friday round up - from the “did you know” files…

Published on October 19, 2007

Did you know…
-You can request your FBI file. Have you ever been to a political rally, signed a controversial petition or been to a seedy third world county? If so, you may have an FBI file. Request yours here.
-Some British have resorted to pulling out their own teeth because they cannot find - or cannot afford […]

Has the “open source” community been saving for a rainy day? Well its raining…

Published on May 15, 2007

It looks like the “open source” community may not be so “open source” after all. From the Washington Post:
“Open-source programs step on 235 Microsoft patents, the company said. Free Linux software violates 42 patents. Graphical user interfaces, the way menus and windows look on the screen, breach 65. E-mail programs step on 15, and other programs touch […]

Published on April 11, 2007

Well our friends at CleanFlicks are back in business - for now. The company claims that it has found a “loophole” that allows them to legally edit movies. According to the Daily Herald:
“The loophole revolves around a portion of the Copyright Act, 17 U.S.C. § 106, which states, ‘the fair use of a copyrighted work, including […]

Using iTunes to build a nuclear weapon. Wait, what?

Published on March 9, 2007

I blogged sometime ago about the problems I’ve had with my iPod booting up. Looks like I’m not the only one who has had this problem. Check out Matt Hickey at TechCrunch give some instruction on how to do major home surgery to an iPod that won’t boot. Pretty cool stuff.
While I’m on one here check […]

I have a patent question - can you help?

Published on February 13, 2007

I am doing some research on a company and came across a “Patent Pending” notice on their Web site. How do I uncover information on this patent pending? Is there a useful Web site out there? Where is the best place to go without using an attorney?
Thanks in advance!
