The Entrepreneurial Team of the Year Award Goes to….

Posted by Chris Knudsen on June 5th, 2006

The success of any one business is rarely attributable to the sole efforts of one individual. This why I have such a problem with the many so called “entrepreneur of the whatever” awards.  Usually these awards are given to one person, the CEO, in recognition of his great efforts in making his business a success. I am currently in the CEO post for my first time. Let me tell you something I know firsthand: SUCCESS IS ABOUT A TEAM NOT ABOUT ONE PERSON.  If this sounds cliche, my apologies.  Please keep reading.

I would feel like a real idiot if someone came to me right now and said that they wanted to lump an award on me for my greatness at being a CEO. Number one, I’m not that great. Number two, the success of my company is dependent upon all involved not just my efforts.  Now, as the CEO I may be responsible for setting and executing strategy but the work that my guys are doing is what’s really making us a success.  As we go out and raise money I can show potential investors that we have sales and a quality product. I am involved in both those areas but frankly its others on my team that are taking care of these details and making this business a success.  I can understand wanting to give a guy credit because he’s the CEO and his company is doing well but don’t say its because of him that its a success. That’s crap.  The mechanics of business are way too big for any one person to handle.  If the company is a success its because ALL people involved are making it a success.

I have never seen a publication or any other entity hand out a management team award. Does one exist?  The next publication I see that gives out an “Entrepreneurial Team of the Year” award has my money for life. Colin, is that an idea that interests you?  Maybe this is an idea for Funding Universe.

One more thing, shame on those CEO’s who take all the credit. Shame on those CEO’s who use the success of the business built by the team to self promote. Shame on those CEO’s who think they are solely responsible for the success of the business. If this is you, figure it out.
