Cormac McCarthy’s book “The Road” is set for theatrical release in November (holy cow!)

Posted by Chris Knudsen on August 11th, 2008

I just read that Cormac McCarthy’s book The Road is set to be released as a movie this November. Wow! I read the book last year, and - as the father of two young boys - it left a strong, lasting impression on me.

The Road is a disturbing story about a man and his son trying to survive in a post-nuclear war wasteland. They believe that by following a dangerous road they will be led to the safety of a survivalist community rumored to be living near a distant ocean shore. Along the way they must scavenge for food, avoid gangs, other survivors, and (worst of all) cannibals. The novel is extremely graphic and disturbing. Good luck keeping the movie to an “R” rating. McCarthy’s writing style is difficult and frustrating at times but the way he writes creates images that burn into your mind. I could not put the book down. I read it over 48 hard hours. The end of the book brought me to tears. I have never cried reading a novel.

Lord of the Rings fans will be excited to learn that Viggo Mortenson is playing the father. I think that’s a good fit. Frankly, I don’t think I’ll see the movie. I already know it will be way too graphic. The novel was hard enough. McCarthy captures the horrific essence of human survivalist mentality in a way I have never seen. It is a damning condemnation of what mankind will do to each other when pushed into a mode of animalistic survival. If there’s ever is a nuclear war, just pray you don’t survive.

Man, after that, I need to find something positive to blog about or go get an ice cream cone for lunch! Geeee!
