My friend and former Provo Labs co-worker, Jordy Gunderson was kind enough to give me a documentary called Article VI.
Article VI of the US Constitution states:
“…no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.â€
Jordy says:
“Of course, Mitt’s failure to win over the Republic party was not the result of a Religious Test administered by the government. I would say, however, that an informal religious test was undeniably administered by the media and the people.”
The documentary dives deep into religious bigotry in the Untied States. More than anything else it highlights the extreme conflict within the modern evangelical movement. I enjoyed watching the footage of JFK giving his famous speech on religion. I enjoyed the congenial banter between Director Bryan Hall and Southern Baptist Pastor Robert “Smiley Boy” Jeffress. I enjoyed the footage of the director having dinner with the anti-Mormon protesters. Some parts of the film were a little too artsy for me but overall I highly recommend it.
The film brought back a lot of emotion and memories. Its been a long time since I was told to my face that I was going to “hell” for being a Mormon. I never understood the approach of the “you’re going to hell” crowd. I mean, these are the guys who claim they’re out to save the world, right? Yet, they never offered me an invitation to join them? Oh well, I would have turned them down anyway. Â
Bottom line, thanks to Bryan Hall and Jack Donaldson for their good work. If you’re in Utah - I’d like to take you to lunch sometime. Please drop me a line.
Here’s the official siteÂ
Here’s the trailer
If you’d like my copy of the movie, please let me know and we can arrange to have you pick it up. The first one to claim it wins. All I ask is that you blog about the movie after you’ve reviewed it and then pass it on when you’re done.
PS - Jordy is looking for a job. Show the man some love ![]()
Romney lost because he appeared to “have all the answers,” an immediate red flag for most.
Left by Blake on 02/26/2008@Blake:
I’d have to disagree. Every candidate appears to have all the answers. On paper, Romney was the perfect GOP candidate. His religion, and the reaction of the general public and media to his religion, was his downfall.
Left by Chris Knudsen on 02/26/2008The problem of bigotry is that it hurts you in ways that you don’t see at the time. Romney and the evangelical right would agree on 99 percent of issues. However, bigotry caused many to and go for a governor who raised taxes and who clearly lacks depth in economics.
Left by Rand on 02/26/2008Now, we have a Republican who admits that he is not strong on economics, and a pair of Democrats who both believe that you can tax your way to prosperity. For those of you who are younger than 35, you may want to read magazines from the 1970s. If those who will not learn from history are doomed to repeat it - get ready for gas lines, Stagflation and a government that wants to control every apect of your life.
@Rand:
You couldn’t be more right on.
