Thomas S. Monson was introduced as the new President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints today. Here’s a brief background on President Monson’s professional life:
- Graduated cum laude from the UofUÂ in 1948 - business managementÂ
- Taught business management at the UofU
- Advertising executive with Newspaper Agency Corporation
- Sales manager and then later the general manager of Deseret News Press
- MBA - BYU in 1952 (they had MBA’s back then?)
- He served for many years as chairman of the board of Deseret News Publishing Co. He is a past president of Printing Industry of Utah and a former member of the board of directors of Printing Industry of America.
- Served as a member of the Utah State Board of Regents, the body which governs higher education in the State of Utah.
- Served on numerous corporate boards including Bonneville International, which owns KSL (among other things)
- In December 1981, President Monson was appointed by President Reagan to serve on the President’s Task Force for Private Sector Initiatives.
- Past President of Printing Industry of Utah and a former member of the board of directors of Printing Industry of America.
President Monson has given what I regard as the best management advice ever:
“When we deal in generalities, we shall never succeed. When we deal in specifics, we shall rarely have a failure. When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported, the rate of performance accelerates.“Â Â Â
Thousands of books have been written on business and leadership, but almost all of the elements for successful management are found in those four short sentences. Â
I am thankful for his excellent example as a strong leader and business professional. I am more thankful to call him “Prophet” and I sustain him on this important day.
