Over the last month or so I’ve been in contact with some people who have greatly impressed me. I’d like highlight some of my recent experiences with these people…
John Bresee of Backcountry.com
I was recently at an event where John Bresee of Backcountry.com spoke about building a successful company online. I didn’t get the chance to talk to John at the event but it was great to hear him speak.
I first met John back in 2000 at the Outdoor Retailer Show. I then met him and his partner Jim Holland up in Heber at a garage they were using as a converted warehouse (that garage is now a store and hair salon - I get my hair cut there). There were just a few guys at Backcountry back then but they were growing like a weed. Later they moved up Highway 40 to a larger building and now they have offices in Park City and a huge warehouse in Salt Lake. They were recently purchased by a private equity group and revenues are rumored to be somewhere in the $200 million range. What a cool story and company!
Somewhere along the line, John and Jim bought GearTrade (my first Internet start up) from the company that bought it from us (Wildcat Software). GearTrade is still alive and kicking because of John and Jim. Thanks, guys!Â
Benoy Tamang of Hooksell
Benoy Tamang of Hooksell is one great entrepreneur. He’s hung in for Hooksell for years and he’s now starting to see the company really take off. I’ve been helping Benoy to establish his sales processes and its been a wonderful experience (more on that later).
Benoy hung in there when so many other people would have called their situation a “dip”. He is now being rewarded for his tenacity. Way to go, Benoy!
Partick Byrne of Overstock.com
I was recently in a meeting with Patrick Byrne of Overstock.com. He literally hand wrote out and signed a fair contract between he and another person in the room - no lawyers present. I was impressed with his level of trust in a person he vaguely knew and I was also impressed with his ability to clearly see all the dynamics of the technical and business issues at hand. It was one of those meetings I will always remember. Â
I want to thank these people for their positive impact on me and on the Utah business community.
Chris,
Loved the post. I love to read about interesting and impressive people.
