- If you go looking for trouble then you’re going to find it.
- Don’t walk into a conflict with a predetermined conclusion.
- Get rid of people who are looking for reasons to be offended and poison the well.
- Don’t give positive reinforcement to negative behavior.
- Don’t be a Jerk. There is more power and respect in nice.
- Be and act like a human.
- Have real empathy for your employees.
- Each person who works for you is motivated by something personal. Find out what that is.
- Managing a department or a business is more about psychology than sociology. Â
- Everybody has a boss.
- Get over yourself.
- Learn to accept that people will talk badly about you - its just part of the territory.
- Perception is reality.
- Don’t break your own rules.
- Be genuine - people come with great built-in BS meters.
- Weak managers manage by consensus.
- Dump the BS speak - solutions, best practices, robust, etc and stop using cliches.
- Stay above the fray.
- Don’t get personally involved with your employees.
- Don’t express personal religious and political beliefs in the workplace.
- “act as if” but remember that fakes are always exposed for who they are.
- Under commit and over deliver.
- Don’t get cynical.
- Treat people the way they want to be treated not the way you think they want to be treated.
- Right or wrong, outside influences on your employees will determine the way they act and perform at work.
- Stop getting annoyed at the small stuff.
- If you want a seat at the table then bring something to eat.
- Contrary to popular belief, sometimes it is your job to solve problems as a manager.
- Give people a little more time and they may just impress you.
- Be smart enough to know when you’re in a pissing match. Be smart enough to know when to back off the pissing match.
- Know when to quit but know why you’re quitting.
- When appropriate use humor to diffuse tense situations.
- Give at least three positive comments or compliments per day. By forming that habit this act will become second nature and bring much good with it.
