  1. If you go looking for trouble then you’re going to find it.
  2. Don’t walk into a conflict with a predetermined conclusion.
  3. Get rid of people who are looking for reasons to be offended and poison the well.
  4. Don’t give positive reinforcement to negative behavior.
  5. Don’t be a Jerk. There is more power and respect in nice.
  6. Be and act like a human.
  7. Have real empathy for your employees.
  8. Each person who works for you is motivated by something personal. Find out what that is.
  9. Managing a department or a business is more about psychology than sociology.  
  10. Everybody has a boss.
  11. Get over yourself.
  12. Learn to accept that people will talk badly about you - its just part of the territory.
  13. Perception is reality.
  14. Don’t break your own rules.
  15. Be genuine - people come with great built-in BS meters.
  16. Weak managers manage by consensus.
  17. Dump the BS speak - solutions, best practices, robust, etc and stop using cliches.
  18. Stay above the fray.
  19. Don’t get personally involved with your employees.
  20. Don’t express personal religious and political beliefs in the workplace.
  21. “act as if” but remember that fakes are always exposed for who they are.
  22. Under commit and over deliver.
  23. Don’t get cynical.
  24. Treat people the way they want to be treated not the way you think they want to be treated.
  25. Right or wrong, outside influences on your employees will determine the way they act and perform at work.
  26. Stop getting annoyed at the small stuff.
  27. If you want a seat at the table then bring something to eat.
  28. Contrary to popular belief, sometimes it is your job to solve problems as a manager.
  29. Give people a little more time and they may just impress you.
  30. Be smart enough to know when you’re in a pissing match. Be smart enough to know when to back off the pissing match.
  31. Know when to quit but know why you’re quitting.
  32. When appropriate use humor to diffuse tense situations.
  33. Give at least three positive comments or compliments per day. By forming that habit this act will become second nature and bring much good with it.
