The iPhone is going to be a hit. I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing the phone and looking at the first reviews. I think V1.0 of the iPhone is a leap ahead in mobile computing (this thing is really more of a computer than a phone) but I will definitely wait to get an iPhone until V2.0 comes out (if I get one at all). If you remember, V1.0 of the iPod was leaps beyond anything else on the market but V 2.0 of the iPod was way better than V1.0 of the iPod.
The biggest complaint about the iPhone is its slow dial up data speeds. I’d rather have the 3G version of this phone so I’ll wait it out. Phone functionality also seems to come second to a lot of other things (I need a phone before I need an iPod or even a browser). I’d also like a lot more than 8 gigs of storage. I also want to hear what users experience is with “The New” AT&T. I hate AT&T and I was glad when they went belly up. Their customer support was horrible and they always screwed up my billing. Verizon has never let me down in this area and I will have a hard time leaving them. One of the other things I would like to do is test the phone for sound quality. I have a hearing problem and I want to hear people talking to me over the phone before I buy one. This is why I dumped the vx6700 - the vx5300 has been great for me in this regard.
I also have another thought after reading the reviews - businesses will not adopt the iPhone much in the same way they have not adopted Macs as part of their IT infrastructure. The world of business is too ingrained with Treo’s and Blackberry’s and I think its going to stay that way. Employees don’t need an iPod, they need quick communication - a phone and email device first and everything else second. The keyboard functionality on the iPhone will also hold back business users - they are too used to the keyboards on the Treos and Blackberrys. The iPhone’s price is also a barrier for business. Just my two cents.
In the meantime, here’s Walt Mossberg’s video review of the iPhone…
(Dang that's two video's in the last week on my blog. What's going on here!)
I’m a fanboy. But I too will probably wait this one out. After packing Treo’s (180, 270, 600, and 650), Samsung, and the Nokia E61 smartphones, I’m very happy with my BlackBerry Pearl 8100. Form factor is key for me. I’ve adapted to the smaller, multi-use keyboard. But I love slipping the svelt little device out of site in my pocket. Hate the BlackBerry fees. Hate that support for IMAP is weak (I’m a non-Exchange user). Hate that it’s not very Mac friendly (no Bluetooth sync). But form factor rules for me. I’m not sure I can deal with the big faced iPhone.
