I came in the office this morning and the employees in the other room were gushing over something big. Was it a new sale? Was it some other great news? No. Google launched a calendar. Wow! Stop the presses! Call the President! Jump up and down for joy! Oh look they’re using AJAX! What a revolutionary idea!Â
There were more than 400 articles online today about the launch of this amazing innovation in personal organization.Â
People, wake up! It’s a freaking calendar!Â
I honestly do not understand all the Google love in this world. I get better search results out of Microsoft’s beta search, YouTube kicks Google Video’s butt and I can point out a lot of other companies who do much less evil than Google - including Microsoft.Â
A calendar just pushes Google closer and closer to looking like a portal or should I say Yahoo.
You bring up some good points Chris, especially when you talk about apps like this one bringing Google closer to a Yahoo! sort of site. I guess everyone has been drinking a little too much Google Juice.
Left by Kory Hoopes on 04/13/2006I love the Google calendar and one of the main reasons is that I can share it. Calendar sharing is a big problem for me. I haven’t been able to find something as easy and efficient as this. Everyone that I need to share calendars with already has a gmail account so I am not hassling them with opening another account somewhere else. If you don’t have a need for calendar sharing then you probably wouldn’t care; but for me, Google calendar gives me a small solution to a big problem.

Left by Darla Seamons on 04/14/2006I found myself on the bandwagon until I realized that it is just another online calendar. Now married to my Blackberry, there isn’t a Google Calendar app (like Google Talk) nor can I actually access it through the web on my BB. What a disappointment.
Although I don’t share your extreme displeasure with all of the hullabaloo surrounding every Google product or service release, I do think it’s interesting to see how extremely, passionately jazzed everyone gets about every Google release. I think the calendar is cool and everything, but it’s far from earth-shattering, and I agree with your points about YouTube and (dare I say it) MSN’s search. Sometimes I feel like we’re all turning into “yes men” to the Google. “Great idea, Mr. Google!” “Nobody does it like you, Mr. Google!” Sometimes I wonder if we’ll all look back on this Google boom time like we look back on listening to Milli Vanilli — We all got that amped about them?? We’ll see …
