Hey, that’s funny, I was an IT manager at a janitorial company :p I reported to the CFO, but I couldn’t be a CIO because I didn’t have enough gray hair (I was told this by the CEO). Nice.
But I did CIO stuff. Strategy stuff. Sometimes the “most important” job was helping an executive keep their Palm synching… otherwise the world was falling apart.
Oh yeah, and then there’s the idea that a CIO would be able to do everything from corporate strategy down to the most mundane ones-and-zeros IT work. It was a huge stretch, but expected by everyone.
