What’s Your Master Dream Plan?

Posted by Chris Knudsen on May 2nd, 2006

Chuck Coonradt told me this story.

A young man had the privilege of sitting at the dinner table with his father and his father’s friends every Friday night. These men were all well known in the local community and came from all walks of life.  They would often sit around and talk about missed opportunity and “what ifs”.

One Friday night the young man went to his room discouraged by all this talk.  Determined not to end up like these men, he sat down and wrote out a master dream list of over 100 goals he wanted to accomplish in his life. By the time he was 80 he had almost succeeded in fulfilling this “master dream list”, which included things like riding a horse in the Rose Bowl parade, meeting the Pope and traveling to numerous countries. He had fulfilled his goals and his dreams became a reality because of his tenacity and because his goals became tangible when he wrote them down. He never sat at the dinner table as an old man with regrets and asked “what if”. He made it happen.

What does your master dream list look like? Will you sit around the table at 80 and regret all the missed opportunity or will you go and do the things you want in this life? The first step is to write down your goals.  When you do they take on a new meaning.  Rarely are goals accomplished that aren’t first written down. So I challenge you to make your list and then I challenge you to bring it to life.

  1. [...] I have written many business plans over the years.  I wrote two business plans that took me to the finals at the UEC. I didn’t win, which was very disappointing because I could have used the $40,000.  Beyond all the pain, writing a business plan is actually a great exercise.  It gets the creative juices flowing.  I have come up with some of my best ideas while writing business plans.  In the same way your goals come alive when you write them down, your business comes alive when write a business plan. 2. Enjoyed your web log above. You are soooo on it when you state that writing the goals down is a major factor in the process towards reaching them. As evidence of that, many times I have made goals at the first of the year that I won’t look at until the next year. I usually forget them over the course of the year–or at least they leave my conscious mind. But, invariably, when I review the list at the beginning of the new year, I find that I have accomplished most if not all of them! It is amazing. Writing your goals down is powerful.
