I have a patent question - can you help?

Posted by Chris Knudsen on February 13th, 2007

I am doing some research on a company and came across a “Patent Pending” notice on their Web site. How do I uncover information on this patent pending? Is there a useful Web site out there? Where is the best place to go without using an attorney?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Patent pending can mean complete B.S.

You can check the us patent office. they have a huge database.

  2. Unfortunately, the patent office does not list pending patents, only issued ones.

If you want to check it out anyway, the patent office website, where you can search for all existing and expired patents is located here: http://uspto.gov/

  3. Chris,

Contrary to the prior posts, the U.S. PTO website does contain information on pending applications. See http://appft1.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html However, only patent applications which have been published can be viewed. You typically will need to know the names of the inventor(s) to find the publication, or be able to find words that will be used in the published application. Good luck

  4. You can also try to Google Patent Search - it’s a great tool
