I’ve been using Linkedin for about a year. I really haven’t seen much benefit from the service…yet. Paul Allen claims that he has seen an incredible benefit and Marty Fahncke has seen some benefit as well.
Right now, I view Linkedin as something of a popularity game. The more connections you have the cooler you are - kind of like high school. In October, I had about 35 connections. Then I got motivated to add more. Yesterday I hit 76 connections and I also have 10 recommendations. My goal is to be at 100 connections by the end of the year.
Can you help me hit that goal? Let’s scratch each other’s backs! Here’s the link to my Linkedin profile:

To do an invite you will need my email, which is ctknud “at” gmail dotcom. If you don’t have a Linkedin account I recommend setting one up. After you do, shoot me an invite and I’ll join your connections.
Also, if I’ve worked with you in the past I am more than happy to provide you with a recommendation if you give me one as well.
Let the fun begin! Â
Well, there is QUALITY of personal connections and then there is QUANTITY. Which are you going for?
If you add people anonymously from a web post how are you going to be able to vouch for them when the eventual hook-up request for someone else in your network comes?
Left by Matthew Reinbold on 12/18/2006If can’t vouch for them then I won’t connect them.
You can’t tell me that people with 500+ connections can vouch for everyone in there. Its about quantity and quality but my experience on Linkedin is that its more about quantity.
Left by Chris Knudsen on 12/18/2006Hey, I’ve posted on your blog, does that count?
Actually, while I like the LinkedIn service, I have never quite got how it makes a difference. It’s probably good for that first introduction but beyond that…
Anyway, you have my email and I am interested in learning more about what you do. If you want to chat by phone (Skype works for me), you know where to find me.
Best,
James
Left by James Weddle on 12/18/2006Actually, it’s about both quality and quantity. I don’t have 500+ contacts as many others because I actually “de-link†a lot of contacts for various reasons, most related to QUALITY issues such as not following through with connection requests etc.
However, on the QUANTITY side, there is a benefit to having a large number of connections, as the more people in your network, the more people you can find when you need them, and the more people who can find you when they need you.
Left by Marty M. Fahncke on 12/18/2006Marty:
How do you “de-link” someone - there is a person I want out of my connections. By the way, when are you going to get a blog?Â
Left by Chris Knudsen on 12/18/2006To remove one or more people from your list of connections, go to My Contacts: Connections, click “Remove connections†in the right-hand margin, and follow the instructions provided.
Blog? What’s a blog?
Left by Marty M. Fahncke on 12/18/2006I think everyone agrees that quality and not only quantity is important in social networking sites, however in my experience with the site I have found a greater value by increasing quantity. By doing so I can not always provide a recommendation for a certain person, but I have increased the value of the network to those connected to me by extending their visibility to my connections.
Left by Thomas Bowcut on 12/19/2006Thanks, I just removed somone. Dang, now I’m working against my goal!
Left by Chris Knudsen on 12/19/2006I’m still in the process of breaking connections with strangers in my network.
Left by Pete Abilla on 12/20/2006Chris,
What’s up with you “de-linking” me from your network?!

Left by Brock Blake on 12/20/2006@Brock:
Your still there my man! It was another unnamed person who got the boot. I’ll tell you next time we meet.
Chris
Left by Chris Knudsen on 12/20/2006Chris,
Looks like we’re linked now. Sounds like everything is going well.
Have a good holiday season.

Have a great Christmas as well!

Left by Chris Knudsen on 12/21/2006Chris,
I was just giving you a hard time.
I have to agree with you. I think that LinkedIn is a great concept, although I haven’t ever really used it. I think that Paul does a good job of using his connections to network with unknowns throughout the country, but I haven’t ever taken advantage. Maybe it’ll be a new year’s resolution to take advantage of my LinkedIn network.
Happy Holidays!

Left by Brock Blake on 12/23/2006OK Chris, you win! In finally have a blog. Check it out at http://www.martyfahncke.com
