Fail Fast - Correct Faster - Learn

Posted by Chris Knudsen on April 11th, 2006

All managers make mistakes - all of them.  There are several ways to deal with failure.  Smart way: Fail. Recognize the error of your ways. Apologize if needed. Take corrective action. Learn from the experience.

Rarely do managers follow this benevolent course. It usually goes like this: Fail. Recognize the error as someone else’s fault. Blame others. Take no corrective action. Learn nothing from the experience.

Those who fail fast - correct faster - and then learn from their experiences are the people who succeed in life. Those who follow the other route usually don’t find the success they dream about and are usually hated at work. My brother in law decided to open a retail store about eight years ago in Provo, Utah. He had no retail experience; in fact, he had no real business experience. The family tried to rally around my brother in law and his wife to make this business a success. He failed over and over again in the business and he did not learn from his mistakes. When the business finally folded, he blamed everyone (including those who helped him for free for months on end) but himself. Pathetic!

If you want to be a success, swallow your pride, suck it up and learn to admit mistakes. Correct the problem. Learn and pass it on.
