Don’t Take My Advice

Posted by Chris Knudsen on April 14th, 2006

Here’s the most important piece of advice I can give you: Don’t take my advice.

Yes, that’s right don’t listen to me or anyone else for that matter.  Well that may be a little extreme but what I want you to be aware of is the fact that you must know the intentions of those giving you advice before you actually take their advice. Even those with many years of experience are perfectly capable of dishing out bad advice.  In my first start up I received plenty of bad advice that I didn’t realize was bad advice until years later. I trusted senior advisors who gave me bad advice. It wasn’t a malicious thing they just should have known better and I should have sought out a second opinion. I was ignorant to trust so blindly.

So where do you seek out advice? Build relationships with people who are strictly advisors that have no financial interest in you. Find verifiable sources with proven track records and even then check their advice against other verifiable sources with proven track records.

It may be a group of other CEO’s who get together monthly in an informal environment to give each other advice with no other outside influences present.  This group could work to pull each other “out of the box” in order to gain insight and clarity on each CEO’s respective business and management issues. I really like this idea.  Anyone interested in starting this up with me?

Also, I am launching a series of blog posts called “Entrepreneurial Thoughts”.  Some will be from me but most will be from others who are way more qualified than me. I hope you enjoy.

And finally…please add me to your blog roll if you already have not done so (you know who you are) :)

  1. [...] Who is advising you? Do you trust them? How do you know you can trust them?  Is the person qualified to give you advice on the thing you are seeking advice on?  It is so important to talk to the right people.  I posted not long ago about taking advice from others.  Give it a read.  Bottom line: beware who you take your advice from and don’t be afraid to question advice.  [...]
